Municipal waste

Last updated

The four townships run 18 waste sites between them: 13 landfills and waste disposal sites, and 5 transfer stations, which take waste to be hauled elsewhere and bury nothing. Each township’s sites are for its own residents, who show its landfill card at the gate, and fees apply to some items.

A site is listed under the township it stands in, which is not always the one that runs it: Pine Springs Waste Disposal Site is run by Algonquin Highlands and stands in Minden Hills. Irondale residents in the former Snowden Township use Highlands East’s Glamorgan transfer station.

Hours change with the season, and every site keeps different ones, so they are not copied here. Each site links to its township’s page, which has them.

Where this comes from

Each township’s own list of its waste sites: Dysart et al’s Waste Disposal Sites, Minden Hills’ Landfill and Transfer Stations, Highlands East’s Waste Disposal Sites and Algonquin Highlands’ Waste Disposal Site Hours pages. Recorded in data/waste_sites.yml.

The County’s GIS layer of landfill sites is not used for this list because it is out of date: it still shows the South Bay, Lochlin, Irondale and Hawk Lake sites, which their townships no longer list, and Algonquin Highlands closed Hawk Lake in 2021.

Every place is in a township because the Ontario Road Network puts its civic address on that township’s side of the road, not because of its mailing address. Contact details are what each place publishes itself, never Google, Yelp or TripAdvisor.
